Sigismund von Neukomm

Sigismund Ritter von Neukomm (* July 10, 1778 in Salzburg, † April 3, 1858 in Paris) was a composer, pianist, diplomat, and possibly a spy.

Life

Neukomm was a pupil of Michael Haydn, later a close associate of Joseph Haydn and a great admirer of Mozart. As an extra to Mozart's Requiem he set the responsory Libera me, which is sung during the subsequent absolution and, if necessary, of course, absent in the commonly played version of Mozart Süßmayr because it does not belong to the liturgical texts of the Missa pro defunctis. Neukomm donated Joseph Haydn's grave stone and adorned it with a five-part puzzle canon on Horace's ambiguous words non omnis moriar.

Neukomm worked in many countries around the world. He was, for example, from 1804 to 1808 Kapellmeister in Saint Petersburg and from 1816 to 1821 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. However, most of the time he lived in Paris.

His musical oeuvre includes more than 1,300 works, including ten operas, three oratorios, sacred music and songs in different languages. His great example of Mozart, he learned never know, but he was harpsichord teacher of his son Carl Thomas Mozart. Neukomm oriented in his music at his models, but managed nevertheless to be innovative.

Neukomm is today little known, but a growing interest in the versatile artist in recent years.

1930 Neukommweg in Vienna Hietzing was named after him.
