Franciszek Ksawery Branicki

Franciszek Ksawery Branicki (* 1730, † 1819 in Biała Cerkiew ) was a Polish Adjutant General and Great Hetman of the Polish crown. He is also known under the name Franz Xaver Graf Branicki.

Life and work

Branicki, the simple noble family of the Korczak de Branicki belonging, 1761 went to St. Petersburg, there was a friend of Stanislaus Poniatowski, whom he saved the life, and was after his accession to the throne in 1764 Adjutant General and Krongroßjägermeister.

In Poland he fought a duel in 1766 with the writer and adventurer Giacomo Casanova, both had fallen into an argument in attracting a singer. In the gun duel Branicki was severely wounded.

Family

The Grand Marshal of the Crown was married to Baroness Alexandra Engelhardt, a niece of Prince Potemkin. In March and April 1765, he remained as an envoy of the Polish king to negotiate with Frederick the Great in Berlin. At that time, there was a romance between Count Branicki and Teresa de Cocceji, the daughter of the famous dancer Barbara Campanini.
