Franciszek Smuglewicz

Franciszek Smuglewicz lit. Pranciškus Smuglevičius ( born October 6, 1745 in Warsaw, Poland - Lithuania, † September 18, 1807 in Vilnius ) was a Polish- Lithuanian painter and draftsman.

Life

Franciszek Smuglewicz came from a family of artists, his father was the painter Łukasz Smuglewicz, his brother Antoni was also an artist. His first teacher was his father, and later studied with Szymon Czechowicz. In 1763 he went to Rome to study with Antonio chestnuts and 1765 thanks to a grant from the Polish king, Stanislaus Augustus Poniatowski Second, at the Accademia di San Luca.

1784 returned to Poland and became an art professor, first in Warsaw, then in Vilnius. In 1800 he accepted an invitation of Tsar Paul I to St. Petersburg, where he was the artistic design of St. Michael's Castle ( Russian Version: Михайловский замок ) took over.

Smuglewicz mainly painted historical and religious scenes and portraits. The drawings and lithographs in the Historia Narodu polskiego ( German: history of the Polish nation ) by Adam Naruszewicz also came from him.

His Schüller et al were Józef Oleszkiewicz, Józef Peszka, Maciej Topolski and Mateusz Tokarski.

Smuglewicz died on 18 September 1807 and was buried in Vilnius on RASU kapines.
