François Clouet

Francois Clouet (* 1510 in Tours, † September 22, 1572 in Paris, and François Janet ) was a French painter.

Life

Clouet's father, the Dutch painter Jean Clouet, settled at Tours and later in Paris. Jean Clouet (really Jehannet ) named after his first name Janet. " Janet " was therefore also as a surname for his son to use, which has led to confusion.

Francois Clouet received in 1541 the French civil law and was court painter to Francis I, Henry II and Charles IX.

Style

Clouet's paintings bear the clear trace of its Dutch origin per se; they are very finely executed with a predominantly silver-gray tone, which makes the modeling of the flesh seem a little flat. With Holbein, which his images are often attributed, it can not be measured. Clouet is one of the painters of the Second School of Fontainebleau.

Works

His main works include the portrait of Charles IX. , In the Belvedere at Vienna, life-size and in full figure. The Louvre in Paris has the portraits of Charles IX. and Elisabeth of Austria. A collection of 88 drawn with black and red chalk portraits of members of the French court is located in Howard Castle.

The working lady in the bathroom is as the appearance of Diane de Poitiers been identified, but it is similar likely Marie Touchet, mistress of Charles IX. Several drawings, mostly in the Musée Condé, are ascribed to him as well.
