François Giroust

François Giroust ( born April 9, 1737 Paris, † August 28 1799 in Versailles) was a French composer.

He was at Notre Dame de Paris cathedral his training. In 1756 he became Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Orléans. In 1775 he had a winning success of appearance in the Concerts Spirituels that made him famous overnight. From 1782-1792 he was superintendent of the Royal Chapel of Louis XVI. , Revolution caused the last one in this post.

The " Grands Motets " by Giroust are the last compositions of this once in France so popular genre. Despite his position at court he composed some music revolution, the anthem of " Versaillais ". His Masonic music are missing. The style of his works is comparable to that of Gossec or Grétry. Giroust died in 1799 in the Palace of Versailles, where he had a job as a janitor after the revolution.
