François Huber

François Huber ( born July 2, 1750 in Geneva, † December 22, 1831 in Lausanne) was a Swiss naturalist.

François was the son of artistically active lawyers, officers and Council Jean Huber (1721-1786) and Marie- Louise Alléon. He was the great-nephew of Marie Huber. He studied at the Academy of Geneva and was a student of Charles Bonnet. He married Marie- Aimée Lullin 1776 and lived in Pregny.

He devoted himself to the study of the living conditions of the bees. Since he had an eye condition from the age of 15 years and became blind at age 23, he made his research with the help of his servant François Burnens and his wife, who constructed the bees in the glass, the observed folding hives. He gained recognition for his 1792 " Nouvelles observations sur les abeilles " ( New observations on the bees) published results. He was also called "bee -Huber " ( " Huber of abeilles "). After that, he worked with Jean Senebier on the germination of seeds.

Huber was co-founder of the Geneva " Société de Physique et d' Histoire Naturelle" (Society of Physics and Natural History ). From 1813 he was a corresponding member of the Paris Academy of Sciences. Augustin- de Candolle Pyrame named the Brazilian species Huberia burma after him.

His son, Jean Pierre ( born January 23, 1777 Geneva, † December 22, 1840 in Yverdon ) observed in the sense of his father bumblebees, sawflies, beetles, and especially ants and wrote: " Recherches sur les moeurs of fourmis indigènes " (Paris 1810 ), which are considered the main work.
