François Joseph Lagrange-Chancel

François Joseph de Lagrange - Chancel ( born January 1, 1677 Castle d' Antoniac at Périgueux; ibid † December 26, 1758. ) Was a French dramatist.

Thanks to his early recognized poetic talent - he wrote at age 14, the tragedy Jugurtha - gained Lagrange - Chancel the protection of the court and Racine, but not later justified the high expectations of his patrons.

His tragedy Amasis ( 1701) is about both in terms of the character-drawing and what regard the style far behind Voltaire Mérope. Poetic were his Philip Piques, violent, directed against the regent satires. Imprisoned for the first three, he fled to Spain and Holland, where he wrote a fourth and fifth.

After the death of the regent in 1723, he returned and died on December 26, 1758.

The " Philip Piques " were reprinted several times (most recently 1858). The oeuvre complètes published in 1758 ( in five volumes ) and the oeuvre choisies were published in 1811 and 1830.
