François Tavenas

François Tavenas OQ ( born September 12, 1942 in Bourg -de- Péage; † 13 February 2004 in Luxembourg ) was a Canadian engineer and scientist.

Life

He received an engineering degree in civil engineering at the Institut national des sciences appliquées de Lyon in 1963 and a doctorate specializing in soil mechanics in 1965 at the Université de Grenoble. In 1968 he moved to Canada to work as a lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Laval. Since July 15, 1971 Canadian citizen, he was a research assistant in 1970, associate professor in 1973 and professor in 1978. He was the Dean of the Faculty of science and technology from 1985 to 1989.

From 1989 to 1990 he was Vice-Principal (Planning and calculation ) and then worked until 1997 as Vice-Principal ( Planning and Resources ) at McGill University. From 1995 to 1997 he was Acting Vice-Principal ( Macdonald Campus ). He also was a professor at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Applied Mechanics. In 1997 he was appointed rector of Laval University, and Professor left in the Faculty of Civil Engineering and in 2003 to become founding rector of the University of Luxembourg.
