François Trèves

J. François Treves ( born April 23, 1930 in Brussels ) is a French mathematician who deals with partial differential equations.

Biography

Treves in 1958 received his doctorate at the Sorbonne in Laurent Schwartz. He then went to the USA where he was from 1958 to 1960 assistant professor at Berkeley. 1961 to 1964 he was associate professor at Yeshiva University, and from 1964 to 1970 professor at Purdue University. In 1970 he became a professor at Rutgers University, where he was in 1984 Robert - Adrian professor emeritus and 2005.

In 1972 he received the Chauvenet Prize for On local solvability of linear partial differential equations in the Bulletin of the AMS (Volume 76, 1970, S.552 ). About the problem he presented in 1962 with Louis Nirenberg studies, and they thought necessary and sufficient conditions which they proved for equations with analytic coefficients, 1969 ( Comptes rendus de l' Académie des Sciences Paris Bd.269 ). The issue was put to him in 1955 by Schwartz for his diploma subject.

In 1977 he was Guggenheim Fellow. In 1991 he received the Leroy P. Steele Prize for his book pseudo-differential and Fourier integral operator. In 2003 he became a foreign member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. In 1970 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Nice ( Hamiltonian fields, bicharacteristic strips in relation with existence and regularity of solutions of linear partial differential equations ). He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
