François-Xavier Fabre

François -Xavier Pascal Fabre ( pron. fabr ) (* April 1, 1766 in Montpellier, Hérault Dépt; . † March 16, 1837 ) was a French painter, draftsman, etcher and art collector.

As a " master student " of the painter Jacques Louis David could Fabre in 1787 to participate in the great exhibition of the Salon de Paris. He was awarded by the Académie des Beaux -Arts, the Prix de Rome; this price included, inter alia, a spacious study stay at the Villa Medici in Rome.

From Rome Fabre toured southern Italy in 1793 and stayed a long time in Naples. In 1800 he accepted a professorship at the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno ( Academy of Art ) in Florence and taught there until 1826 as a professor. In January of this year, his partner, Louise of Stolberg- Gedern died, he began slowly all the offices and obligations set down. The legacy of Louise of Stolberg- Gedern, in the main, a large collection of art bequeathed to the city of Florence Fabre.

Fabre in 1826 returned back to France and settled in his native town. There, founded a museum, an art school and a public library; these foundations were generously equipped with private collections Fabre. During the Second Restoration Fabre was raised to the peerage (Baron ). On March 16, died in 1837 François -Xavier Pascal Fabre in Montpellier; 14 days before his 71st birthday.

Reception

Fabre's paintings exist in historical accounts and in landscapes with historical window dressing; they belong to the classical direction. The majority of them, the museum at Montpellier. In the Louvre in Paris, the painting is Philoctetes on Lemnos.
