Françoise Cachin

Françoise Cachin (* May 8, 1936; † 5 February 2011) was a French art historian.

Life

Françoise Cachin came in 1936 as a daughter of the physician Charles Cachin and his wife Ginette ( 1913-1980 ), born Signac, to the world. Their grandfathers were communist politician Marcel Cachin and the pointillist painter Paul Signac.

She studied with André Chastel art history at the Institut d' Art et d' Archéologie ( Department of Art and Archaeology ) at the University of Paris. Since 1967 she was curator at the Musées de France ( Association of French national museums ). From 1969 to 1978 she worked as a curator at the Musée National d' Art Moderne; first at the Palais de Tokyo and later at the newly opened Centre Georges Pompidou. In 1978 she joined the planning staff of the new Musée d' Orsay, whose founding director was 1986. Here she was instrumental in the organization of the exhibition to Édouard Manet, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne and Georges Seurat. She remained at the Musée d' Orsay until 1994, when they called the French Minister of Culture Jacques Toubon as Director of the Musées de France. In this office you were under 34 national art museums, including the Louvre, the Musée d' Orsay and the Palace of Versailles. In 2001 she retired and received the appointment honoraire directeur des Musées de France.
