Frankfurter Kunstverein

The Frankfurter Kunstverein eV is a non -profit organization which is dedicated to the dissemination of contemporary art. He is one of the oldest German art associations.

History

The Frankfurter Kunstverein was founded in 1829 by a group of influential citizens of Frankfurt am Main, including the senator and later Mayor of the Free City of Frankfurt, Johann Gerhard Christian Thomas, the historian Johann Friedrich Böhmer and the art historian Johann David Passavant. The association soon belonged to almost all major citizens and artists in the city. Its purpose was the promotion of the arts and art sense in the merchant city, as well as the acquisition of new works to the public.

Built in 1861 the building of the Kunstverein in Junghofstraße was destroyed in a bombing raid in 1944. Even before that, the art association was weakened by the Nuremberg laws and the persecution, expulsion or destruction of its Jewish members. As the Reich Chamber of Culture affiliated institution he was temporarily banned in 1945 by the American Military Government. 1948 moved into the Kunstverein a new domicile at the Eschenheim system, but ranged revenue barely to cover running costs and for more than the exhibition of local artists. Mid-1950s, had to close these spaces of the Kunstverein. In 1962, could be related with its modern extensions after temporary makeshift quarters, the historically reconstructed stone house. With increased financial support from the city and under the new director Ewald Radtke the international exhibition of 20th century art was now possible.
