Frans Grootjans

Frans Edward Elisabeth Grootjans ( born January 24, 1922 in Antwerp - Wilrijk, Antwerp, Belgium, † February 20, 1999 in Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium) was a Belgian politician of the Partij voor de Vrijheid Vooruitgang (PVV ).

Biography

After graduation, he studied Commercial Management and Consulting science and graduated with a licentiate. Later he was editor in chief and director of the daily newspaper De Nieuwe Gazet.

His political career began as the candidate of the PVV in 1954 with the election of the member of the House of Representatives, where he represented the interests of the arrondissement of Antwerp until 1987.

In March 1966 he was appointed by Prime Minister Paul Vanden Boeynants to the Minister of National Education in the government and was one of these until the end of his term in June 1968.

In 1971 he also became a member of the municipal council of Antwerp and belonged to this until 1976. In addition, he was from 1973 to 1977 as the successor to Willy De Clercq first chairman of the party the PVV and was then also succeeded by De Clercq in this function.

For his political achievements, he was awarded on 18 October 1974 with the honorary title of Minister of State.

On January 6, 1985, he was appointed by Prime Minister Wilfried Martens as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and medium-sized businesses in the Cabinet and was this but only to 28 November 1985. Subsequently, he was from 1985 to 1987 President of the Flemish Parliament.
