František Tkadlík

František Tkadlík ( born November 23, 1786 in Prague, † January 16, 1840 ) was a Czech painter and draftsman. He was one of the leading portrait painters of the first half of the 19th century in the Czech Republic.

Life

The son of an innkeeper in Prague already in his early childhood for the first time with the painting in touch. In parents' house was home to two private teacher of drawing, which probably exerted a decisive influence on his later career. After also rich relatives of the family supported him in this decision, he began by visiting the New Town Gymnasium in Prague in 1803 with his studies at the Academy of Painting in Prague, and later studied philosophy at the Charles University in Prague.

The resulting movement in Bohemia of the National Revival decisive influence on his work. Upon recommendation of Professor Josef Bergler, took his Johann Rudolf Czernin, Count of and Chudenitz at who supported him during his studies until 1807. From 1817 to 1825 Tkadlík worked as a court painter to the noble family Czernin and overseer of its collection of paintings in Vienna and studied at the local Academy. Among his teachers was Heinrich Friedrich Füger. He continued to maintain contact with his Czech scholars, including Joseph Dobrovský and František Palacký, of which he still anfertigte known portraits. The close contacts with these personalities deepened his patriotic feeling. After completing his work in Vienna in 1824, received a scholarship to stay in Rome. In 1832 he returned to Vienna and Prague in 1836, where he was appointed the first director of the Czech Academy of Fine Arts, Prague.

Works

With his work in the style of classicism and empiricism, with its spatial representations, he surpassed the works of his teacher. His paintings can be divided into several periods, which are closely related to his stay abroad mostly. The first period until his stay in Vienna is characterized by family portraits Prague personalities. In Vienna, there were then mainly portraits of the Czernin family and of Dobrovský (1820 ) and Palacky (1821 ) and image with patriotic theme The Return of St. Adalbert in the home (1824 ). In Rome and Italy, he devoted himself to the biblical apostle Paul says goodbye templates (1831 ), and landscape painting. After his return to Bohemia other patriotic -themed works from the history of the country were added, including St. Wenceslas and Ludmila at the Fair ( 1837).
