Franz Graf von Wimpffen

Franz Emil Lorenz Graf Wimpffen ( born April 2, 1797 in Prague, † November 26, 1870 in Gorizia ) was an Austrian general.

Life

Franz Emil Lorenz came from an old noble family of Swabia Wimpffen, his father was Karl Eduard Franz Count von Wimpffen ( 1776-1842 ). A distant relative was Field Marshal Maximilian von Wimpffen, a comrade Radetzky.

In October 1813, he joined as a second lieutenant in the Imperial Army and made the campaigns of 1813 and 1814 in the main army of the allies at, those of 1815 in the Frimontschen army in Italy. By September 27, 1839, he became major general and brigade commander in Trieste, November 16, 1846 with Field Marshal Lieutenant and Division Commander in the 2nd Army Corps in Italy. As a result, he distinguished himself in the campaign of 1848, especially in Vicenza and Custozza and acquired thus the Military Maria Theresa Order. At the top of the particular intervention in the Papal States troops he forced Bologna and Ancona by artillery bombardment to surrender and then took over the management of the government of the Legations. In October 1849 he was appointed civil and military governor of Trieste and governor of the coastal country.

Following the resignation of Vice- Admiral Hans Birch Dahlerup of the service of the kk Navy in August 1851, he was - as the brother of Emperor Franz Joseph, Archduke Ferdinand Max appeared too young for this position, entrusted with the Provisional Supreme Command of the Navy. In this role, he led the reorganization of the naval forces on quite profitable.

After retiring as a naval commander in chief, he was appointed on 24 April 1854 Feldzeugmeister. From September 1854 he commanded for a time the 1st Army Corps; In June 1859, he led under the command of General cavalry Franz von Schlick, the 1st Army at the Battle of Solferino.
