Franz von Reber

Franz Xaver von Reber ( born November 10, 1834 in Cham, † September 4, 1919 in Pöcking, the district of Starnberg ) was a German art historian.

He studied from 1853 to 1856 in Munich and Berlin and his habilitation in 1858 at the University of Munich. In 1863 he became an associate professor, in 1869 professor of art history and aesthetics at the Polytechnic in Munich, now the Technical University of Munich, and in 1875 director of the State galleries. In 1881 he was knighted.

Reber has particularly worked on the art of antiquity and the history of architecture: " The ruins of Rome and the Campagna " (1863, 2nd edition 1877); "The Vitruvius Ten Books on Architecture, translated and explained " (1865 ); " History of Architecture in ancient times " ( 1864-67 ); "Art history of antiquity " (1871 ), but also about the art of the Middle Ages ( " History of Art of the Middle Ages ", 1885) and the more recent art history ( " history of modern German art from the end of the last century ," 3 vols, 1874-76, 2nd edition, 1884). He was with Adolf Bayersdorfer editor of "Classic Images Ark" (1888-1890) and editor of "Classic sculptures Ark" (1896-1900), two typical contemporary anthologies.

In 1887 he was appointed associate member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, in 1890 a full member.
