Franzhagen Castle

The Castle Franz Hagen - also known as Castle Franz Hagen, Franz garden or Franzhof - was a castle near the present-day school village in southern Schleswig -Holstein. Before its destruction in 1716 it was owned by the Dukes of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg.

The castle was based on an older system that may be dated from the Middle Ages. Under Maria of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel a Grange was created and from 1608 was carried out by her husband Duke Francis II of Saxe -Lauenburg - a son of Duke Francis I. - an expansion of the facility to a large palace with extensive gardens. The building owner went during the work the funds run out, so that a local legend, the workers remained unpaid. Francis II used the palace until his death in 1619, it passed into the possession of his son Philip of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- Glücksburg. Through him, the castle came to his nephew Johann Christian, the short-lived line of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg -Franz Hagen founded here.

The castle was abandoned in the early 18th century due to progressive dilapidation. From the building today nothing remains, reminiscent of the system, only a street called Hofgraben that limited the former castle district. The equipment also broken the chapel came to the part in the Marienkirche in neighboring Büchenberg.
