Francis II, Duke of Saxe-Lauenburg

Francis II of Saxe- Lauenburg ( born August 10, 1547 Ratzeburg, † July 2, 1619 in Lauenburg / Elbe) was 1581-1619 Duke of Saxe- Lauenburg.

Life

Franz was the second surviving son of Duke Francis I of Saxe-Lauenburg (1510-1581) from his marriage with Sibyl (1515-1592), daughter of Duke Henry of Saxony. The Prince was brought up in the Lutheran faith and became first emperor, and later in the Spanish military service.

In 1566 he took part in a campaign in Hungary and in 1568 promoted him to the Duke of Alba to the colonels in the Netherlands. 1571 laid Franz's father, the government down in favor of his son Franz. The passed over older son Magnus, who was standing in Swedish service protested, and went militarily against Lauenburg. He conquered Ratzeburg, but could be sold by Francis called help by troops of the Lower Saxon Circle.

Francis I took over the government in connection itself again after the death of his father in 1581 Franz ruled jointly with his brothers Magnus and Moritz. Magnus was arrested in 1588 on the flight to Hamburg and shipped to Franz. Franz let his brother imprisoned until his death in the tower of the castle of Ratzeburg.
