Julius Henry, Duke of Saxe-Lauenburg

Julius Henry of Saxe-Lauenburg (* April 9, 1586 in Wolfenbüttel, † November 20, 1665 in Prague) was 1656-1665 Duke of Saxe- Lauenburg and imperial field marshal.

Life

Julius Henry was a son of Duke Francis II of Saxe -Lauenburg (1547-1619) from his second marriage with Maria (1566-1626), daughter of Duke Julius of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel. Julius Heinrich was educated at the University of Tübingen and then went for a short time in which the Swedish king Gustav II services in anticipation of the Diocese of Osnabrück, he converted in his youth time to Catholicism.

Later in the imperial service in command of Julius Heinrich 1617 a regiment against the Republic of Venice then a regiment in Hungary. Julius August took part in the Battle of White Mountain. As chamberlain of Emperor Ferdinand II, he was as an envoy to the Danish court sent Christian IV. In 1619 he founded, together with the Earl of Altheim and the Duke of Nevers, the Order of Knights of the Immaculate Conception, which was in 1624 papal confirmed.

In 1623 Julius Heinrich received by the Emperor, the rule Schlackenwerth. In Schlackenwerth Julius Henry had a luxurious castle mess with Park, which became his permanent residence. In 1629 he received the command of the imperial forces in Poland in 1632 and negotiated a peace treaty with the Elector of Saxony. Julius Henry was considered a confidant and close friend of Wallenstein and was suspected of being involved in the attacks against the Emperor. After Wallenstein's assassination Julius Heinrich was arrested and imprisoned in Vienna, the Imperial Commission, he was able to escape by his stand as a prince of the empire and was released from custody after the Peace of Prague.

After the death of Ferdinand II, he again appeared at court in Vienna and was designed by Ferdinand III. sent on several diplomatic missions. During the negotiation of the Peace of Westphalia Julius August succeeded in confirming the pin Ratzeburg for Lauenburgische house. In 1656, Julius Heinrich followed his older half- brother August as Duke of Saxe- Lauenburg. When the throne, he confirmed the privileges of the knights and landscape. In 1658 he banned all pledging and sale of fief. With Hamburg and Lübeck Julius Henry was involved in border disputes. Under the company name Good Luck gorgeous he was accepted as a member of the literary Fruitbearing society.

Julius Henry died of old age in Prague and was buried in Ostrov.

Marriages and descendants

Julius Henry was three times married. He completed his first marriage on March 7, 1617 in Grabow with Anna ( 1562-1621 ), daughter of Prince Edzard II of Ostfriesland. This marriage remained childless.

His second wife was on 27 February 1628 Toužim Elisabeth Sophie ( 1589-1629 ), daughter of the Elector Johann Georg of Brandenburg, with whom he had a son:

In his third wife he married on August 18, 1632 in Vienna with Anna Magdalene († 1668), daughter of Wilhelm Popel of Lobkowicz Barons, the important Bohemian goods, including spent his imperial city. With her he had the following children:
