Freakwater

Freakwater are an American alternative country band from Louisville, Kentucky. Today, both musicians living in Chicago.

Band History

Early 80s began girlfriends Catherine Irwin and Janet Bean, who had previously played in punk bands, to be interested in early country music and play. In 1989, she took on her first album and advanced to become one of the most renowned bands of the early alt-country wave.

From the beginning, the musicians were supported by further changing band members. Faithful traveling companion here is bassist David Wayne Gay, part of the solid line-up of the band. They are under contract since the mid 90s when Chicago label Thrill Jockey. Offers a major labels from Nashville they refused as well as a planned collaboration with the label E -Squad of musician Steve Earle, because they saw in both cases too influenced their musical integrity.

Style

Freakwater help yourself to the early, original roots of American country and folk music and interpret these idiosyncratic and oblique, mostly with acoustic guitars and vocal harmonies, with Bean takes over the soprano part and Irwin the alto voice. They refer to the Carter Family, the Louvin Brothers and Hank Williams, Bill Monroe and Woody Guthrie. In music and lyrics combine Gloomy with beauty. " Simultaneously sinister and beautiful," ruled Wolfgang Doebeling by Rolling Stone They sing mostly about things that affect them personally, tell stories and comment every now and then also the political and social situation of a critical perspective.

Other projects

Janet Bean also plays in the rock band Eleventh Dream Day and has a side project named " Janet and Jeff".
