Fred Hopkins

Fred Hopkins ( born October 10, 1947 in Chicago, † January 7, 1999 ) was an American jazz bassist of the avant-garde jazz.

Life and work

Hopkins played a significant role in the development of the Creative Jazz. He was a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and was known in particular as part of the trio Air. In 1976 he participated in the Wildflowers sessions. He also frequently collaborated with cellist Diedre Murray. In addition, Hopkins was twenty years (from 1976-1996 ) are closely associated with the various formations of David Murray, to hear how the album Special Quartet of 1990.

He also took with Muhal Richard Abrams, Arthur Blythe, Hamiet Bluiett, Peter Brötzmann, Craig Harris, Oliver Lake, Bobby McFerrin, James Newton, Ivo Perelman, John Purcell, Don Pullen, John Tchicai, Henry Threadgill and Tom Varner plates auf.1999, shortly before his death, he still participated in the recording of the album Rising Daystar of Malachi Thompson.
