Fred Marriott
Fred Marriott ( born December 31, 1872 in Needham, Massachusetts, † April 28, 1956 ) was an American race car driver. In 1906, he presented with a Stanley Rocket Racer, which was driven by a steam engine, on the Daytona Beach Road Course at Ormond Beach a new speed record for automobiles on. With 205.5 km / h, he was the first man to faster than 200 km / h drove ( 127.659 mph ) .. The steam car land speed record is the longest officially recognized existing record.
Fred Marriott tried to surpass the record in 1907, but fell into a rut. The car took off into the air and broke on impact into two halves apart. Marriot was injured and refrained from further attempts.
