Frederick III, Landgrave of Thuringia

. Frederick III, the severity, and the Freundholdige (* December 14, 1332 in Dresden, † May 21 1381 in Altenburg ) was Landgrave of Thuringia and Margrave of Meissen.

As the son of Frederick the Serious he took over in 1349, the paternal countries Meissen and Thuringia, which he ruled jointly with his brothers and Balthasar Wilhelm I..

His wife Katharina von Henneberg brought him as her dowry a large part of the county of Henneberg ( care Coburg ). By buying he also acquired Elgersburg, Zoerbig, parts of the Margraviate of Landsberg and the Sangerhausen.

The governors of Plauen and the counts of Schwarzburg he forced with violence to a number of assignments. Furthermore, he destroyed together with Henry II of Hesse the Sterner covenant.

Frederick died on 21 May 1381 Altenburg. His tomb is in the chapel of the monastery Prince Altzella.
