Frederick V of Denmark

Frederick V, nicknamed the Good ( born March 31, 1723 in Copenhagen, † January 14, 1766 Christiansborg, ibid ) was King of Denmark and Norway, Duke of Schleswig and Holstein, Count of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst from 1746 until his death.

Life and work

Frederick V was the only son of King Christian VI. of Denmark and his wife Sophie Magdalene of Brandenburg- Kulmbach.

He was a little strong-willed Regent and completely reliant on consultants, including Johann Hartwig Ernst von Bernstorff and Count Adam Gottlob Moltke. His reign was marked by peace and prosperity in Denmark. He let the Frederiksberg district of Copenhagen Staden build with the Amalienborg Palace. For stays in what was then the Kingdom belonging Gluckstadt he was there to purchase the Wasmer Palace. After the death of pietistic Christian VI. won court life under Frederick again to shine; the king promoted the arts and the sciences.

First unhappy about the early death of his first wife Louise of Great Britain, he soon married Juliane von Braunschweig -Wolfenbüttel, a sister of Frederick II The marriage to his second wife, who is considered cool and ambitious in history, but especially the succession rights of her son Friedrich sought to preserve, was unhappy. The king was melancholy, neglected himself and the affairs of state and fell drunkenness, what could have been the cause of his early death. His tomb is located in Roskilde Cathedral.
