Frederick William MacMonnies

Frederick William MacMonnies ( born September 28, 1863 in Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn, † March 22, 1937 in New York City, New York ) was an American sculptor and painter.

Life

MacMonnies learned painting from his mother, who studied under the famous painter Benjamin West. In 1800 he went with Augustus Saint -Gaudens in the teaching and later became his assistant. In evening courses MacMonnies studied at the National Academy of Design and Art Students League of New York in New York City. In 1884 MacMonnies went to France, where he studied sculpture at the Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux -arts de Paris. He twice won the highest award ( Prix studio ) for foreign students. Shortly thereafter, he returned to the United States and worked again at Saint- Gaudens - but after a year he returned to France, where he lived until the outbreak of the First World War.

Frederick William MacMonnies was twice married, and died on March 22, 1937 from the effects of pneumonia.
