Frederik Ruysch

Frederik Ruysch ( born March 23, 1638 The Hague, † February 22, 1731 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch anatomist and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Ruysch ".

Life

Ruysch studied medicine at the University of Leiden at Johannes van Horne (1621-1670), Franciscus Sylvius, and Florentius Schuyl ( 1619-1669 ). 1664 he received his doctorate for Dr. med.

In 1685 he became professor of botany at the Athenaeum Illustre of Amsterdam and the first director of the botanical gardens Hortus Medicus Amstelodamensis.

Among many other topics, Ruysch also dealt with issues of corpse preservation and production of anatomical specimens. He injected a mixture of tallow, white wax, and cinnabar into the vascular system and put his preparations in alcohol then one, the black pepper was added. The prepared by alcohol body was so long protected against rot, until the alcohol had evaporated.

Ehrentaxon

Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin named in his honor the genus Ruyschia from the plant family of Marcgraviaceae.
