freedesktop.org

The freedesktop.org project (formerly X Desktop Group, XDG ) is a nonprofit project in the software industry with the aim to improve the interoperability and the common basis of work environments for the X Window System. It was founded in March 2000 by Havoc Pennington, the most famous developers of the project include Keith Packard.

The development of specifications and the individual projects is assessed in collaboration with the known desktops GNOME and KDE. Also, the project is working closely with the developers of the X.Org server, which is the most common implementation of the X Window System. The project does not see itself as a classic standardization committee. It refers to this task on other projects such as the Free Standards Group or the X.Org Foundation. Rather, the project provides a place for cooperation, to exchange ideas and elaborate codes and specifications.

Freedesktop.org also has a software section in which there are programs that are in a loose connection with the project objectives and, for example, improving the interoperability of desktop software.
