Freedom Toaster

Freedom Toaster are in convenient public places in different countries ( at the beginning only in South Africa ) established focal stations with which users can burn their own copies of various open source software packages, and other free content on brought with CD or DVD discs for free.

The Freedom Toaster project is a means to overcome the difficulties due to poor internet infrastructure in South Africa arise when it comes to download Linux or other open source software.

The project is funded by the Shuttleworth Foundation, founded by Mark Shuttleworth in October of 2000.

In early 2007, the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld set up the first such public burning station in Germany called Flying Toaster in building 9914.
