Freedom Tower (Miami)

The Freedom Tower in Miami is a 1925 erbauter tower and is a reminder of the Cuban immigration to the United States. The built at 600 Biscayne Boulevard Tower has been added to the list of Historic Places on September 10, 1979 in the U.S. and also considered a historical landmark of the country.

History

The tower, completed in 1925 was the headquarters of the newspaper Miami News & Metropolis and clearly shows an example of the Mediterranean style of architecture was present widely in the area around Miami at this time. He was the tallest building in Miami and later placed by the crown 78 meters high.

After the newspaper publisher had left the building, it was reconstructed by the State in a refugee camp. This time was a sign of the opponents of the communists to leave the country under Castro and flee to the United States. After the Cuban regime was dissolved, many Cubans decided to emigrate to Cuba again and thus the empty building was sold to another owner.

In 1997 the building for $ 4.1 million was sold to the Cuban-American head of the Cuban community in America Jorge Mas Cnosa.

The building has been restored and is now regarded as a monument of international cooperation. It houses a museum, a community hall, a library and many offices. The Freedom Tower is currently used as an art gallery.

The name Freedom Tower

The located in Miami Freedom Tower got its name by Cuban refugees, and has its name from the fact already longer than the under construction Freedom Tower in New York City. By the same name, there was often confusion and, therefore, the Freedom Tower in Miami not to compare with the in New York. However, the New York Freedom Tower was in spring 2009 officially renamed One World Trade Center.
