Freiburg freight bypass railway

The freight rail bypass Freiburg is an exclusively reserved for the freight railway line to the west of Freiburg im Breisgau. The freight rail bypass allows freight trains to bypass the busy Central Railway Station Freiburg im Breisgau on a direct, separate line.

The freight bypass track is classified as a major railway, accessible via a double-tracked and electrified with catenary. It is one of the highest track class D4, which means the permissible axle load is 22.5 t and the linear load is 8.0 t / m.

In the freight bypass track the Punctual Train Control ( PZB 90) is used, as opposed to parallel Rhine Valley line, which is secured with Linienzugbeeinflussung ( LZB ).

History

To relieve the Hauptbahnhof, Freiburg goods station was built in 1901-1905. The first proposed site lay to the south of the main station on the Rhine Valley line, but since this evoked protests from the local population, instead, a greenfield site west of downtown was used.

Since this area was far away from the existing railway facilities, it was served by a new railway line that links the north and south of Freiburg with the Rhine Valley line. The new route could be planned in a straight line, so it is half a mile shorter than the old route through the Central Station.

The freight bypass track was inaugurated on September 4, 1905.

Future

As part of the expansion and new Karlsruhe -Basel, an additional bypass path is built, Freiburg is widely bypassed along the A5. This addition to the trains on the rolling road, which begin and end in the freight station of Freiburg, and occasional trains account for all long-distance freight trains, so that the freight bypass path can be used for other purposes. Therefore, the route is to be operated within the framework of the project " Breisgau- S -Bahn 2020 " from 2020 by S-Bahn trains on the links Freiburg Hbf -Bad Krozingen - Staufen- Münster and Freiburg- Elzach. For this purpose two new compound curves are created that connect the freight bypass track towards the main station to the railway line Freiburg -Colmar. In addition to the route to the five breakpoints Tullastraße, Neue Messe, Runzmattenweg, Haslach and St. Georgen be built.
