French Forces in Berlin

As Forces Françaises à Berlin Forces Françaises de or Berlin ( German: French Military Forces in Berlin), the units of the French armed forces were called, who were stationed on the agreements of Yalta and the Potsdam Conference in West Berlin.

Just as the United States and the United Kingdom, France also had units stationed in West Berlin. The units of the United States were known as the Berlin Brigade and the United Kingdom were called Berlin Infantry Brigade.

History

According to the agreements of the Allies Greater Berlin was divided into four sectors after the unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht in 1945. Only the victorious powers, France, Soviet Union, United Kingdom and United States were allowed to station troops occupying the city.

During the Cold War, the units of the Western Allies should protect the western part of Berlin against Soviet and East German troops. The Federal Republic of Germany was not allowed because of the demilitarized status of West Berlin to entertain units of the Bundeswehr in Berlin. The French army stationed their first units in July 1945 in Berlin, their headquarters was from 1947, the Quartier Napoléon in Wedding.

After the end of the Cold War, the military contingents of the three Western Allies withdrew in accordance with the provisions of the Two Plus Four Treaty until July 1994 in Berlin.
