The French Frigate Shoals Airport occupies almost the entire space on the Tern Island Iceland on the belonging to a French Frigate Shoals Atoll Hawaii.

It was built in 1942 by U.S. soldiers of the 5th Battalion Seabee as a base for the Pacific theater during World War II. For this, the island was filled to its present size, so here in addition to the start and runway pitches for up to 24 single-engine aircraft have been established. During the peak operation time 188 people were stationed here, which were replaced every three months for fresh troops from Pearl Harbor. He served as an emergency landing on aircraft that flew between Pearl Harbor and Midway Islands, and as a base for reconnaissance missions in the area.

1946, the island was flooded by a tidal wave, which the Navy might have suggested abandoning the airfield.

In 1952, the U.S. Coast Guard constructed a LORAN station on the island and the airfield was used for post and support flights. The U.S. Coast Guard used the airfield until the year 1979.

The U.S. Air Force stationed 1961-1963 a portable air traffic control at one end of the island, which was operated by the Bendix Radio Company with 6-10 man. The aerial surveillance was part of the PMR, the Pacific Missile Range, the monitored not only the Discoverer flights of the U.S. Air Force, but also the Soviet space flights.

Today, the airfield is used to supply stationed on the island of Ranger United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
