French Lick is a town in French Lick Township, Orange County, Indiana, United States. According to the census in 2000, French Lick had 1,941 inhabitants.

History

French Lick was originally a French trading post. On a map of the state of Indiana from the year 1835, the community previously Saltspring said. The foundation of French Lick was completed in 1857.

From 1840, the sulfur -containing sources of location for medical purposes were used. In the second half of the 19th century French Lick became the resort of a certain notoriety in the United States. At the beginning of the 20th century could be due to the emergence of new casinos some celebrities down in the town, including the gangster Al Capone, the composer Irving Berlin and the boxer Joe Louis.

The French Lick Resort Casino was the capital of entertainment in the city. It remained open as all other casinos were forced to close because the heyday of the city was long gone. The casino was closed temporarily in 2005 due to extensive renovations.
