Frescobaldi (Software)

Frescobaldi is a free, cross-platform editor for editing LilyPond files. The editor was by Girolamo Frescobaldi, an Italian composer and organist of the early Baroque, named.

The goal of the developers was to create a powerful, yet lightweight and easy to use to provide end editor. Frescobaldi is free software and freely available under the GNU General Public License. It was designed to run on all major operating systems (GNU / Linux, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows).

In April 2009, Frescobaldi has won the award for " HOTPICK " in the Linux format. In May 2009, it was listed by TuxRadar as one of the " 100 open source pearls".

Frescobaldi is written in Python and uses PyQt4 for their user interface.

Functions

On the user interface following functions are available:

  • Syntax highlighting and auto-completion
  • Music view with point and click
  • MIDI playback for listening to the correction generated by LilyPond MIDI files
  • Score Wizard for easy preconfigure the musical score
  • Snippets Manager
  • Dealing with multiple versions of LilyPond and automatic use the correct version
  • Built LilyPond documentation browser
  • User interface with changeable colors, fonts and shortcut keys

On music features are available:

  • Transpose music
  • Convert music from relative to absolute notation and vice versa
  • Change language of accentuations
  • Change rhythm
  • Syllabification of the lyrics based on a built-in hyphenation dictionary
  • Fast insertion of articulations, dynamics, straightener, bar lines
  • Updating the LilyPond syntax with convert- ly

Awards

  • In April 2009, Frescobaldi won the " Content Guide " award from the magazine Linux Format
  • In the same journal, the program came in May 2009 in the list of " 100 open source gems " under the heading TuxRadar.
