Freydoon Shahidi

Freydoon Shahidi ( born June 19, 1947 in Tehran ) is an Iranian- American mathematician who deals with the representation theory and automorphic forms ( Langlands program). He is a professor at Purdue University.

Shahidi studied at the University of Tehran with a bachelor 's degree in 1969 and in 1975 received his doctorate at Johns Hopkins University with Joseph Shalika (On Gauss Sums Attached to the Pairs and the Exterior Powers of the Representations of the General Linear Groups over Finite and Local Fields). As a post - graduate student, he was 1975/76 the Institute for Advanced Study ( as in 1983/84 and 1990/ 91) and 1976/77 Visiting Assistant Professor at Indiana University in Bloomington. In 1977 he was Assistant Professor, Associate Professor in 1982 and Professor in 1986 at Purdue University. Since 2001 he has been there Distinguished Professor.

1981/82 he was a visiting professor at the University of Toronto, in 1990 at the University of Paris VII, 1993 and 1997 as a Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science at the University of Kyoto, at the Catholic University of Eichstätt (1993, 1995) and the Ecole Normale Superieure (1995).

A method for the construction of automorphic L-functions is named after him and Robert Langlands.

In 2012 he became a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society ( AMS) and 2010 of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2002 in Beijing ( Automorphic L -functions and functoriality ).
