Friedrich Bernhard Ferdinand Michelis

Friedrich Bernhard Ferdinand Michelis ( born July 27, 1815 in Münster, † May 28, 1886 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German philosopher and theologian and member of the Constituent Reichstag of the North German Confederation.

Life

Michelis attended high school in Münster from 1827 to 1834. He then studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Münster and was ordained a priest in 1838. Since 1849 he was a chaplain and religion teacher in Duisburg. In 1849 he received a doctorate in phil. in Bonn. From 1849 to 1854 he was professor of history and philosophy at the Faculty of Theology of Paderborn. After he was appointed by the Bishop of Munster director of the Collegium Borromaeum in Munster, it came to a complete break with the episcopal authority. From 1855 to 1864 he was pastor in Albachten in Münster. In 1864 he became professor of philosophy at the Lyceum Hosianum in Brown Mountain in East Prussia. As a follower of Old Catholicism him the more activity, however, was forbidden by the bishop of the diocese at the Lyceum. Finally, he was excommunicated in 1870 as one of the main spokesmen of the Old Catholics. Later he was a preacher and a short time pastor of the Old Catholics in Konstanz and 1875 until his death in Freiburg im Breisgau

From 1866 to 1867 he was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives for the electoral district of Olsztyn - Rößel. In 1867 he was also a member of the Constituent Reichstag of the North German Confederation for the constituency Dusseldorf 9 ( Kempen ). In the Reichstag, he remained attached Member. After a conflict with the President of the Reichstag on March 21, 1867, he joined spontaneously by its mandate.

His grave is located in the main cemetery of Freiburg im Breisgau. The bronze figure it was created by Friedrich Moet, the base of Karl Andelfinger.
