Friedrich Christian Bressand

Friedrich Christian Bressand (* 1670 in Durlach, † April 11, 1699 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German poet and opera librettist of the Baroque period.

Life

Bressands too short life was spent primarily on serving German courts. From his birth as the son of the margrave mouth chef in the Baden Durlach residence until his death in Brunswick residence town of Wolfenbüttel, he was always surrounded by court etiquette. With the destruction of the castle and town of Durlach by French troops in 1689 he was forced to flee. Thanks to family connections, he found refuge at the court of the art-loving and enthusiastic opera Duke Anton Ulrich of Brunswick, who left in 1690 to build the Opera House on Hagenmarkt in Braunschweig.

As the Duke himself wrote opera libretti, became Bressand quickly and was able to assist him in organizing theatrical events. Starting with the German arrangements of French and Italian operas, he created soon a significant number of own libretti easily composable with lyrics that were so popular among the composers of that time that many of his librettos were composed several times. Even in the rich supplied with librettist Hamburg opera at the goose market was estimated that his opera seals have even been highly recognized by poets of the caliber of Christian Heinrich Postel. Only neunundzwanzigjährig died suddenly Bressand in Wolfenbüttel after ten years of enormous productive work time.
