Friedrich Engels Guard Regiment

The guard regiment " Friedrich Engels ", also Wachregiment 1 (WR -1), was a federation in regimental strength of the National People's Army of the GDR.

Order

The guard regiment Friedrich Engels served representative purposes and to guard various NVA objects in East Berlin, capital of the GDR, including the city commandant, the branch of the Ministry of National Defense ( MfNV ) and the Intelligence Directorate of the MfNV in Berlin- Köpenick.

The guard regiment had seven companies, which were in turn subdivided into trains and groups.

The three honor companies served in addition to regular guard duty in various objects of the NVA in Berlin also protocol-related purposes. History

The guard regiment was established in 1962 from parts of the guard regiment Hugo Eberlein. The honorary name of " Friedrich Engels " was the military unit in 1980. At this time, the inscription on the sleeve insignia was amended accordingly. As the headquarters was built in the 19th century Artillery Barracks was elected on Kupfergraben.

Since only Allied forces could be stationed in the city by the special status of Berlin, the regiment was formally subordinated to the Soviet city commander.

With the decommissioning of the NVA in 1990, this military unit was disbanded. Successor was the Bundeswehr Eastern Command of the German Armed Forces. The barracks is in the center of Berlin, however, has been empty for the most part.
