Friedrich J. Haberlandt

Friedrich Haberlandt ( born February 21, 1826 in Bratislava, † May 1, 1878 in Vienna ) was an Austrian agronomist. His teaching and research focus was the crop.

Life and work

Friedrich Haberlandt, the son of a master Bürstenbinder studied, since 1845 Law at the Law Academy in Bratislava, but in 1847 turned to agriculture. He completed an internship on a farm estate and began in 1848 with the study of agriculture at the Agricultural College in Hungarian Altenburg. His particular interest was the basic scientific subjects. In 1851 he received at this training facility employment as a teaching assistant for agricultural chemistry and in 1863 professor of botany and mathematics.

In accordance with the duties of his Magisterium itself Haberlandt employed primarily concerned with current problems of crop production, first with questions of irrigation of crops. He made a name as a crop scientist with his 1864 published journal " Contributions to the Acclimation of plants and seed exchange ." The results published therein about the origin value of seeds and thereby identified knowledge gaps gave the seed new impetus for research.

In addition to his seed research Haberlandt also studied the diseases of the silkworm. Based on these studies, he was appointed the establishment and management of a research station of Sericulture in Gorizia in 1869. At this station, he was very successful until 1872. The book created during this time, " The silkworm of the mulberry tree, his breeding and his illnesses " was for decades as a standard work of silkworm literature.

Haberlandt in 1872 was appointed full professor of crop management at the newly established University of Agricultural Sciences in Vienna. As a representative of the physical and physiological work towards his field he dealt mainly with the influence of external factors on the development of the crop. One research focus was given to the investigations on the germination of the seeds. Most of the results of this experimental work was published in which he edited the series " Scientific-practical investigations in the area of plant cultivation " Haberlandt.

Since 1875, Haberlandt attempted to introduce soybeans in Austria and Germany as a crop. His dedicated commitment for the cultivation of this crop led to a lively experimentation at university institutes, experimental stations and in agricultural practice. An initial evaluation of these activities has Haberlandt in 1878 in the book " The soybean. Results of studies and experiments on the Anbauwürdigkeit this newly introduced Culturpflanze " published. His plan to represent the whole territory of agricultural crop production in a comprehensive textbook, unfortunately he could not accomplish. The finished manuscript has " The general landwirthschaftliche crop production" published after his early death his friend and colleague Wenzel Hecke 1879 under the title.

Haberlandt was married to Katharina Köhler from Vienna. The couple had three daughters and three sons. The latter include the botanist Gottlieb Haberlandt (1854-1945) and the folklorist Michael Haberlandt ( 1860-1940 ).
