Gottlieb Haberlandt

Gottlieb Johann Friedrich Haberlandt ( born November 28, 1854 in Hungarian Altenburg, today Mosonmagyaróvár; † January 30, 1945 in Berlin) was an Austrian botanist. He founded the physiological plant anatomy and was co-discoverer of plant hormones.

Life and work

Haberlandt was one of six children of agricultural scientist Friedrich Haberlandt ( 1826-1878 ). His brother Michael Haberlandt (1860-1940) was an ethnologist.

Haberlandt studied at the University of Vienna, where he received his doctorate in 1876. He then worked at Simon Schwendenerstrasse at the University of Tübingen. From 1888 he was professor of botany at the University of Technology Graz and from 1910 at the University of Berlin.
