Friedrich Kottler

Friedrich Kottler (born 10 December 1886 in Vienna, † May 11 1965 in Rochester (New York)) was an Austrian-American theoretical physicist.

Kottler was a lecturer and in 1923 professor at the University of Vienna. In 1938, he was released after the Anschluss because of his Jewish origin. Kottler emigrated and went as chief optician at the Eastman Kodak Research Laboratory in Rochester in upstate New York.

He dealt addition to his work on optics and diffraction theory mainly with the theory of relativity. He succeeded in 1912 by application of the absolute differential calculus to establish the general covariance of the electromagnetic equations which remained valid for the later established by Albert Einstein General Relativity. Relatedly, he dealt with the description of accelerations and rotations in relativity theory, and wrote their own interpretation of the general theory of relativity. In 1922 he wrote an article on " Gravitation and Relativity " in the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Sciences.
