Friedrich Wilhelm Gustav Bruhn

Gustav Friedrich Wilhelm Bruhn ( born November 11, 1853 in Lübeck, † 1927 in Berlin) was a German entrepreneur and inventor.

Life

Wilhelm Bruhn is considered the inventor of the modern taximeter for passenger transport, after which the taxi is named. He was first employees in the engineering office Westendarp & Pieper Hamburg, which he took over after the death of George Westendarp 1902 and 86 /88, Berlin made at the address Wall Street to the factory for precision measuring equipment. He was the holder of numerous patents in Europe and the USA.

The first taximeter Bruhns were installed in the 1880s as a fare - Gazette on horse-drawn carriages. They measured the wheel revolutions. Bruhn turned much inventive effort in order to prevent the manipulation of the counter by the driver, and succeeded in the vehicle owners. 1897, developed by Wilhelm Maybach automobile model Daimler Viktoria was equipped with the Bruhnschen meter. With increasing motorization the international significance of the invention grew. Later Bruhn developed speedometer and altimeter for aviation.

Wilhelm Bruhn was married and had three children. His daughter Adele ( Ada ) Bruhn was married to the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1913, his son Wolfgang Bruhn was an art historian in Berlin.
