Friedrich Wilhelm Schirrmacher

Friedrich Wilhelm Schirrmacher ( born April 28, 1824 in Gdansk, † June 19, 1904 in Rostock ) was a German historian.

The son of a school principal was 1845, the final examination in Gdansk. From 1845 to 1847 he studied history and philosophy in Berlin and then from 1846 to 1847 in Bonn. During his studies, he became in 1846 a member of the Bonner fraternity Franconia. He then returned to Berlin. In Leopold von Ranke, he was in 1848 a doctorate. In 1849 he passed the state examination for teachers. In the period 1849-1854 he worked as an assistant teacher at a Berlin high school and as a senior teacher ( 1854-1866 ). From 1863 Schirrmacher taught as a professor of history at the Royal Knights Academy at Liegnitz in Silesia. In Legnica from 1859, he published the multi-volume work on the Emperor Frederick II, which earned him the price of Wedekind Foundation of the University of Göttingen and the reputation of the University of Rostock (1866 ). There he taught 38 years as a full professor. In Rostock, he gave in 1866 out the deed the city of Legnica until 1455. In addition, he has turned to the Spanish research, in 1881 appeared the first volume of his history of Spain, which begins with the 12th century, from 1890 to 1902 followed by three more volumes, which continue the Spanish history to 1516.

At the Rostock University, he received numerous honors and offices. He was runner-up ( 1874 ), First and Upper - librarian (from 1886) of the University Library, was a member from 1869 of Examiners for teaching in secondary schools and was since 1871 director of the academic Numismatic Collection, 1878/79 he held the rectorate of the University and was 1871/72 and 1893/94 Dean of the Faculty of Arts.

Schirrmacher was particularly known for his works on the Staufer. During the Reformation research he gained as a discoverer and editor of the files and history logs of Marburg conversation importance.
