Friedrichroda Railway

The railway line Fröttstädt George valley, also known as Waldsaumbahn, is a branch line in Thuringia. The route now only partially in operation runs from Fröttstädt On Friedrichroda to George Dale.

History

The railway line was opened on 28 May 1848 as a branch line of the Thuringian Railway to Walter Hausen. It is the oldest branch line in Thuringia. The extension to Friedrichroda was opened on 2 July 1876. On November 1, 1896 further distance part of Friedrichroda was opened to Ohrabahn to George valley, but this was already decommissioned on 2 November 1947 as war reparations to the Soviet Union and degraded.

Current situation

After adjustment of the current freight terminus Friedrichroda has expired. The extensive disused freight rail tracks, and today the oversized acting reception building with a large goods shed testify to its former status of the track and the train station Friedrichroda. While there is a youth club in a part of the reception building, the remaining part as well as the reception building Reinhardsbrunn - Friedrichroda is left to decay.

In Walter Bahnhof both in service station tracks are due to limited signaling capabilities through major signals still used, since each exit signals are only on one platform. Train crossings do not take place as planned. According to reports of the Central German Radio, the state of Thuringia plans due to low ridership ( in the immediate vicinity of the Thuringian Forest Railway runs to Gotha ) the cancellation of railway passenger services on the route, so then the rest of traffic would be set. The traffic contract with DB Regio to operate the route ends on 31 December 2016.

Today the business is handled with diesel railcars of Class 641.
