Friends Provident Trophy

The Friends Provident Trophy is the most important one-day cricket competition of the English first-class county clubs, where in addition to the 18 first-class counties, other teams such as Scotland, Ireland, the Netherlands, or so-called Minor County teams took part. He was until 2005 in pure knockout system, ie knock-out system, discharged. The final is regularly in August or September at Lord's Cricket Ground.

History

The competition was formerly known as Gillette Cup (1963-1980), Natwest Trophy (1981-2000) and Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy (2001-2006). He was the first one-day cricket competition for first-class cricket teams ever. Occasion for its introduction were the years strongly declining viewership in the County Championship. The year before was an experimental competition, the Midlands Cup, played between four of the first-class counties. In the early years the idea of a Eintagespiels with limited number of overs per innings came even to large rejection of many traditional cricket fans.

In the first season, the innings was limited to 65 overs, as of 1964 only 60 over. As an adaptation to the international standard is since 1999 a limit of 50 over. 2005, instead of the traditional white, first used colorful play clothes, and played with a white instead of the red ball. The oldest one-day competition, making it also the last, following the international long been customary standard in one- day cricket.

In 2006, the C & G Trophy lost its old format. The 18 first-class teams plus Scotland and Ireland were divided into a northern and southern group one, with the winners contested the now traditional final at Lord 's. Since the 2007 season, a semi-final round is sandwiched therebetween.

The 20 participating teams are divided into the 2008 season in four regional groups of five teams. The first two of each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.

As of the 2010 season were the Friends Provident Trophy and the National League replaced with a 40 -over competition with preliminary groups and semi-finals, the 40 will be named Clydesdale Bank.
