Frigyes Hidas

Frigyes Hidas [ friɟɛʃ hidɒʃ ] ( born May 25, 1928 in Budapest, Hungary, † March 7, 2007 ) was a Hungarian composer.

Life

Hidas studied composition at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in his hometown at János Visky. From 1951 to 1966 Hidas was orchestra director at the National Theatre and was after his retirement that same year orchestra conductor and artistic director of the National Theatre Budapest. He remained until 1974, when he was music director at the Municipal Operetta Theatre. After he left that position in 1979, he was a freelance composer.

Works

Hidas wrote exclusively tonal works since he firmly believed in harmonies and melodies. His oeuvre includes all genres: operas, ballets, concerts, orchestral works, chamber music, choral works and solo pieces. Attention is paid especially his chamber music for wind and his works for wind band. Particularly noteworthy is his Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra No. 1; it is the most played Hungarian Oboe Concerto nowadays. Stylistically, his works of romance are attributable.
