Fringe (trim)

In the textile knitting technique chains of loops, which are not connected to adjacent meshes, referred to as fringe. They are produced by a needle of a knitting machine, characterized in that the thread is pulled through the loop of the previous stitch and generates a new stitch loop. The result is similar to the chain stitch when crocheting.

As fringed fabric yarns are also referred to, which protrude from textiles. These may result from tearing or cutting, or by the long projecting warp threads of a woven fabric at the seams are tied only in groups. In this thread groups can then additionally yarn are knotted with to produce more wealth, like a tassel. Fringes are used as an aesthetic means. This form of embellishment of garments or carpets is widely used and regarded as one of the earliest embellishments on garments.
