Fritz Brun

Fritz Brun ( born August 18, 1878 in Lucerne, † November 29, 1959 in Grosshöchstetten ) was a Swiss composer and conductor.

Life and work

Fritz Brun was a composer, conductor and pianist. Brun graduated from high school in Lucerne, enjoying regular piano lessons. 1896-1901 he studied at the Cologne Conservatory with Francis Wüllner composition and conducting and Max van de Sandt piano. 1897 Brun received thanks to the composer Friedrich Hegar and Hans Huber a scholarship. In Cologne Brun became friends with Volkmar Andreae, who also studied in Cologne. His friendship with Othmar Schoeck and engagement with whose work reflected in the instrumentation of three songs of colleagues ( On my child's death, the three gypsies, Youth Commemoration ). Subsequently, he became employed at Prince George of Prussia in Berlin as his music teacher and amateur musicians alike. After the death of the Prince (May 1902) Brun went to London, there were private lessons and made ​​his way to the instrumenting couplets for the vaudeville. In October 1902 Brun took a job as a piano and theory teacher at the Conservatory of Dortmund. He was also a teacher of Italian singers.

1903 Brun piano teacher at the music school of Bern. In 1909 he was appointed conductor of the symphony concerts of the Bernese Music Society. He also took over the management of the " Society of St Cecilia " and the " Berner Liedertafel ". With these choirs Brun also undertook concert tours to neighboring countries. Volkmar Andreae brought Bruns second, fourth, fifth and ninth symphony premiered Hermann Scherchen the sixth, seventh and eighth symphony in Winterthur. At the end of the season 1940/1941 Brun resigned from all public offices and moved into the village Morcote (Canton Ticino) on Lake Lugano in order to devote himself entirely to composition. There he lived in the 'Villa Independenza '.

His ashes were buried in Grindelwald, where he particularly fond of wandering.

Works

Brun composed ten symphonies and two symphonic poems (From the Book of Job, 1906), a piano, a violin and a cello concerto, two cantatas, four string quartets, choral music and songs.

Bruns ten symphonies often have Bruckner dimensions. Her tone ranges from the dogged adherence to the Goblin, from the easy to the broody - Looming. They originated 1901-1953, the fourth to eighth between the late 1920s and early 1940s. The sound gesture is dissolved and brighter.
