Froncles

Froncles is a commune with 1592 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Haute -Marne, in the Champagne -Ardenne region. It belongs administratively to the district Chaumont and Canton Vognory.

Geography

Froncles is located about 21 kilometers north of Chaumont on the Marne River. At the community passes the Route nationale 67. At the station of Froncles the trains of TER Champagne- Ardenne.

History

In the caves at Froncles finds from the Neolithic period have been proven. During the Celtic settlement here was an oppidum in the field of town Bruxieres. To 1067 Froncles is first mentioned. In the 11th and 12th century, the castle was built by Bruxieres. Of these, however, are only a few remnants remain. In 1972, the municipalities Bruxieres -le- Froncles and Provenchères -sur -Marne were incorporated.
