Fulmar ( Fulmarus glacialis )

The genus Fulmarus, also called fulmars, belongs to the family of the petrels. It is related to the petrels. The Sibley - Ahlquist taxonomy arranges them on the basis of DNA studies fundamentally different in the scientific systematics.

Species

  • Fulmar ( Fulmarus glacialis ) or North Atlantic fulmar
  • Silver Petrels ( Fulmarus glacialoides ) or Antarctic fulmar

Two prehistoric species have been determined on the basis of fossils on the Pacific coast of California:

  • Fulmarus miocaenus from the middle Miocene
  • Fulmarus hammeri from the late Miocene

Way of life

Fulmars feed mainly on fish, snails, crustaceans, cephalopods, mollusks, and jellyfish. In addition, he also eats carrion and fish waste. The food is picked from the surface. They nest on cliffs and lay a single egg. In defense of the nest site already nestlings spew her stomach oil targeted at the intruder.
